Smoother customer service with an app
We created an app for Mikke-Juna that shows the train's location in real-time.
Case Mikke-Juna
Mindhive brilliantly captured our idea for the app. The collaboration was effortless; we provided our preferences for the design and key features. Suvi kept us updated throughout the project, and we received thorough training at the end. The app turned out to be a very functional and easy-to-use solution for us. We highly recommend Mindhive's services to everyone.

Over its more than 10-year history, Mikke-Juna has become a familiar sight in the city's summer. Thousands of tourists ride the train to explore the central areas of Mikkeli on a guided 45-minute tour. Where did we start
Need
During the summer peak season, Mainospuu's customer service can become overwhelmed with inquiries about Mikke-Juna. Customers often call to ask when the train will arrive at the stop, for example. Mainospuu wanted to improve its customer service while optimizing its resources during the busy season.
Solution
We designed and implemented an app for Mikke-Juna, primarily to display the train's real-time location on a map. The app also shows the train's schedule, pricing, and a brief introduction to the tour's points of interest, available in both Finnish and English.

How did we do it
Starting with the design
We began the project by defining additional content for the initial version of the Mikke-Juna app, beyond the real-time map view. We decided to include the map, pricing, schedules, and descriptions of each tour point in the first version. Additionally, the app was designed from the start to be available in English to serve international tourists in the area.
For the UI design, we utilized the client's updated Mikke-Juna brand image. We aimed for a fresh, playful look that particularly appeals to families with children. We also adhered to our promise to create services that feel good to use. The client could test the UI plans through a clickable prototype before the development work.
Two-app solution
Based on the UI plans, we proceeded with development. The Mikke-Juna app was built using the modern Flutter tool, allowing for cost-effective and quick development of functional apps for both Android and iPhone simultaneously. The map view was implemented as a two-app solution: a separate app for the train staff to control when the train's location is visible to passengers. The mobile device using the staff app must always be on the train to determine its location.
Before the app's release, the solution was thoroughly tested by both us and the client to ensure the map updates correctly. We also created an admin panel for the client to update the app's text content.
What did our customer get
Improved customer service
As a result of our project, we released the Mikke-Juna app for the summer season of 2024. The client will be able to test and experience the app's benefits and potential in practice this summer. The app turned out as desired by the client, and we hope it will be well-received by users.
The current features of the app can free up Mainospuu's customer service from Mikke-Juna-related tasks, allowing them more time to focus on other busy summer activities. The app also communicates Mainospuu's customer-centric thinking and desire to offer top-notch service to Mikke-Juna's customers.
Next steps
During the project, we identified many development opportunities to provide added value to both app users and Mikke-Juna's partners. The app could include notifications for exceptional situations and events, as well as a ticket purchasing feature. Offering various ads and benefits to app users could also bring added value to ad space buyers.
